Leaking Chimney Chase Covers

A chase cover is the metal pan that covers the top of the chimney. Chase covers are typically made from galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminum and even vinyl. Most of these chase cover types are very durable, but galvanized steel, which is subject to rust and corrosion issues, is one of the most common types used, due to cost and availability.

Rusted chase covers cause water leaks in chimneysSeverly rusted chase covers are major source of chimney leaks in prefabricated chimneys. Often times the chase cover has no x-bend in the top to keep water running off the top of the chase cover. Water then pools on the top of the chase cover and oxidizes (or rusts) the metal on top. Eventually the metal becomes weak and small pinholes start to develop in the cover. Water starts to drain through the holes and into the chimney chase itself. Many homeowners see water coming through the vents of the manufactured fireplace and hear a "dripping" sound inside the wall above the fireplace.

Chimney water leaks of this type can cause the fireplace system to rust out and need complete replacement, so it is urgent that if you experience this type of leak that it is discovered and fixed as soon as possible.
